Steve Bernheim, BCFE, ACFE, CPCM
Sports and Recreation Expert

 

Mr. Bernheim has more than 25 years experience as a sports and recreation consultant and has testified in more than 300 litigation cases in both state and federal courts throughout the United States.  Steve has served as an expert in a variety of sports injury negligence suits against schools, recreational facilities and amusement parks involving faulty equipment, improper supervision, poor facilities, non-adhearance to codes and standards, and human error.

Steve is a member of the Academy of Certified Consultants and Experts; the American College of Forensic Examiners; the American Board of Forensic Examiners; the ASTM Playground Surface Committee; the ASTM Playground Equipment Committee; the ASTM Hockey Equipment Certification Council; the National Recreation and Parks Association; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; the American Association for Active Lifestyles and Fitness; the National Association for Sport & Physical Education; the International Recreational Go Kart Association; the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officers; the New England Ice Skating Managers Association; the Recreation Safety Institute; the National Safety Council; the National Safety Management Society; the ASTM Mini Playground Committee; and the ASTM F8 Sports Facility and Equipment Committee. 

Steve has also given several dozen sports and recreation related presentations to various bar associations, and has published a book dealing with games for the disabled entitled "The Road to Glory."

Mr. Carter has more than 20 years experience in water recreation.  His experience includes water recreation including personal injury, facilities and equipment design, operation, and maintenance; personnel safety training; drownings, near-drownings, and spinal cord injuries involving boats/jet skis, pools, spas, lakes/beaches, and water parks; recreational facilities practices, procedures, and policies; equipment evaluations and testing; federal, state, and industry-consensus codes and standards assessments; incident reconstruction; supervision and standard-of-care liability; risk control and safety;  teaching lifeguard certification classes; swimmer education (beginner through advanced); pool equipment, products, and chemicals; CPR Instructor; advanced SCUBA diver; boating skills and seamanship.

He holds numerous certifications, including States of Texas and Michigan Basic Emergency Medical Technician; NASDA – Advanced Open Water SCUBA Diver; NASDS – International Certification of Safe Scuba Diving; Paramed – Hazardous Materials Safety Training; National Pool and Waterpark Program – Lifeguard Trainer; National Spa and Pool Institute – Certified Pool Operator; and many certifications from the American Red Cross including Head Lifeguard Trainer, CPR for the Professional Instructor, Adapted Aquatics Instructor, and AED and Oxygen Therapy Instructor.

 
Jeff A. Davis
SCUBA Diving Expert

Mr. Davis has trained more than 6000 students and 30 instructors in SCUBA.  His experience includes certified SCUBA diver; SCUBA services including operations, repairs, training & rescue operations; CO, CO2 & O2 poisoning; air embolism; nitrogen narcosis; equipment techniques; search & recovery; public sector training; navigation; dive control specialist.

Jeff has conducted rescue operations resulting in the location and retrieval of two diver fatalities, as well as emergency operations to rescue divers suffering from the bends.  He operates one of the top repair facilities in the country with state of the art testing and tools.  Jeff holds certificates as an Open Water and PADI Master Instructor as well as an SSI (SCUBA Schools International) Instructor Certifier.

 
Lisa Ferrara, D. Eng; Biomedical Engineer Mrs. Ferrara has nearly 20 years experience in biomedical engineering, including several years in the Department of Neurosurgery with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.  Her expertise includes musculoskeletal injuries, brain injuries, soft tissue injuries, trauma induced injuries, spinal disorders and the biomechanics of spinal trauma.  Biomechanical behavior of the brain, head injuries, defective helmets and associated brain injuries, spinal injuries, etiologies that affect the central nervous system, sensory loss, child abuse, shaken baby syndrome, and the effects of substance abuse on the brain.

Lisa is a member of the American Society for Testing Materials; the North American Spine Society; the International Biomechanics Society; and the Biomedical Engineering Society.  She has nearly 20 years' experience in presenting lectures or articles regarding Biomedical Engineering, especially spinal issues.  Lisa has authored more than 60 book chapters.

Mr. Hanst has more than 35 years experience as a government and court qualified expert in more than 800 litigations involving sports and recreational activities.  John's professional licenses and certificates include:  licensed investigator, licensed pilot, emergency medical technician, licensed pool and water lifeguard, water safety instructor, CPR and first aid instructor, scuba diver, alpine ski and ski binding specialist, playground safety inspector, USTA tennis trainer, and amusement ride safety inspector and operations technician.

Ronald L. Kidd, LPO, CPO
Prosthetics and Orthotics Expert
 

Mr. Kidd has more than 30 years experience involving orthotic and prosthetic products and procedures.  Ron is certified in both prosthetics and orthotics by the American Board for Certification in Prosthetics and Orthotics. 

Ron's professional memberships and activities include the Ohio Orthotic, Prosthetic, & Pedorthic Licensure Board; Health Care Delegate to the Governor's Small Business Council; the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists; the AAOP Cad-Cam Society; the Ohio Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists; the Ohio Orthotic & Prosthetic Association Examiner; the American Board for Certification in Prosthetics & Orthotics; and the ABC Licensure Committee.  Ron is also a lecturer in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at The Ohio State University Medical School.

Mr. Van Sweden has more than 25 years as a mechanical engineer, with the majority of that time in vehicle crash investigations.  His experience includes vehicle crash reconstruction including cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, recreational vehicles, and personal watercraft; biomechanical injuries; vehicle inspections and testing; vehicle dynamics; vehicle crash demonstrations; seat belt and airbag restraint systems; vehicle systems and structures including: engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, drive trains, brakes, suspension, steering, body corrosion, interior components, and seats; vehicle and stationary equipment fires and explosions; fire origin and cause; injury causation; reconstruction of non-transportation related accidents, including elevators and hoists; durability testing; certification testing; emergency driver training instructor.

Mr. Wickersham has more than 20 years experience in construction, maintenance, and mechanical engineering.  His experience includes recreational activities/ facilities/ equipment, including amusement parks, playgrounds, and winter sports; fire/ explosion investigations; gas turbine & combined cycle power plants; ski resort maintenance and operations, including security, grooming, training & supervision of all personnel; boiling water reactors; nuclear energy plants, including maintenance, supervision, and mechanical tooling.

Jim is a Licensed Professional Engineer, Certified Level I Amusement Ride Inspector, and Certified Playground Safety Inspector. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; the American Society for Testing and Materials, F24 and F27 Committees; National Society of Professional Engineers; Professional Ski Instructors of America; and National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials.
