Our Sports and Recreation Group includes Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Electrical, Materials, Human Factors, Biomechanical, and Medical experts with expertise in a wide range of physical activities including playgrounds; skating (ice and roller); go-carting; off-roading; boating; mountain climbing; amusement parks and rides; snowmobiling; baseball; bicycling; hang-gliding; tennis; skiing (snow and water); sledding; softball; swimming and diving; golfing.
Oftentimes, these investigations involve the design, operation, maintenance, and supervision of sport facilities or the design, manufacturing, maintenance, testing, and warning labeling of sports equipment. Our experts are experienced in handling these various aspects for both property damage and personal injury incidents. In addition, our experts can assist in determining potentially liable parties, including designers, manufacturers, installers, owners, operators, service/maintenance contractors, and/or the injured plaintiff(s).

Paul Albanese, ASGCA
Golf Course Design Management Expert
Mr. Albanese has more than 15 years experience involving golf course design, construction, management, operations, and maintenance; resort master plans; clubhouse planning; residential planning; public park planning; practice facilities; ski mountainside design; maintenance crew management; mowing operations; permitting and financing; turfgrass science; landscape architecture; golf course grading and draining; and brownfield design.   

Paul is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects; the Publinx Golf Association; the Donald Ross Society; the Special Olympics Habitat for Humanity; and the Harvard University Alumni Association.
 
Douglas B. Baumgarten, CHFD, CMES, CPES
Exercise and Fitness Expert
Mr. Baumgarten has more than 30 years experience in exercise and fitness, including recreational facilities, design, operation, and maintenance; exercise equipment; codes and standards; sports risk management; incident reconstruction; warnings liability; supervision liability; standard of care liability; personal coaching/training; fitness testing; and instructor training.

Doug is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Health and Fitness Professionals, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and the International Association of Fitness Professionals.  He is also a Certified Health/Fitness Director, a Certified Medical Exercise Specialist, and a Certified Performance Enhancement Specialist.  Doug serves as Editorial Columnist for Boardroom Magazine and as an Advisory Board Member for Fitness Management Magazine.  He is a four time winner of Boardroom Awards' Excellence in Achievement Award as top Fitness Company/ Consultant.  Doug enjoys weight training, competitive baseball, golf, skiing, cycling/racing, running, and hiking.

Steve Bernheim, BCFE, ACFE, CPCM
Sports and Recreation Expert
Mr. Bernheim has more than 25 years experience as a sports and recreation consultant and has testified in more than 300 litigation cases in both state and federal courts throughout the United States.  Steve has served as an expert in a variety of sports injury negligence suits against schools, recreational facilities and amusement parks involving faulty equipment, improper supervision, poor facilities, non-adhearance to codes and standards, and human error.

Steve is a member of the Academy of Certified Consultants and Experts; the American College of Forensic Examiners; the American Board of Forensic Examiners; the ASTM Playground Surface Committee; the ASTM Playground Equipment Committee; the ASTM Hockey Equipment Certification Council; the National Recreation and Parks Association; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; the American Association for Active Lifestyles and Fitness; the National Association for Sport and Physical Education; the International Recreational Go Kart Association; the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officers; the New England Ice Skating Managers Association; the Recreation Safety Institute; the National Safety Council; the National Safety Management Society; the ASTM Mini Playground Committee; and the ASTM F8 Sports Facility and Equipment Committee. 

Steve has also given several dozen sports and recreation related presentations to various bar associations, and has published a book dealing with games for the disabled entitled "The Road to Glory."

Jeff A. Davis
SCUBA Diving Expert
Mr. Davis has trained more than 6000 students and 30 instructors in SCUBA.  His experience includes certified SCUBA diver; SCUBA services including operations, repairs, training and rescue operations; CO, CO2 and O2 poisoning; air embolism; nitrogen narcosis; equipment techniques; search and recovery; public sector training; navigation; dive control specialist.

Jeff has conducted rescue operations resulting in the location and retrieval of two diver fatalities, as well as emergency operations to rescue divers suffering from the bends.  He operates one of the top repair facilities in the country with state of the art testing and tools.  Jeff holds certificates as an Open Water and PADI Master Instructor as well as an SSI (SCUBA Schools International) Instructor Certifier.

Lisa Ferrara, D. Eng, Biomedical Engineer Mrs. Ferrara has nearly 20 years experience in biomedical engineering, including several years in the Department of Neurosurgery with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.  Her expertise includes musculoskeletal injuries, brain injuries, soft tissue injuries, trauma induced injuries, spinal disorders and the biomechanics of spinal trauma.  Biomechanical behavior of the brain, head injuries, defective helmets and associated brain injuries, spinal injuries, etiologies that affect the central nervous system, sensory loss, child abuse, shaken baby syndrome, and the effects of substance abuse on the brain.

Lisa is a member of the American Society for Testing Materials; the North American Spine Society; the International Biomechanics Society; and the Biomedical Engineering Society.  She has nearly 20 years' experience in presenting lectures or articles regarding Biomedical Engineering, especially spinal issues.  Lisa has authored more than 60 book chapters.

John Frackelton, ASE, MVIC, SSC;
Motorcycle, ATV, and Snowmobile Expert
Mr. Frackelton has over 35 years experience as a Motorcycle, ATV, and Snowmobile Technician, Sales/Service Manager, and Litigation Investigator. His expertise includes motorcycle, ATV, and snowmobile operations and functions; crash  reconstruction; steering, suspension, tires, wheels, and brakes; operator performance evaluations; mechanical, structural, materials, and electrical system malfunctions and defects; speed determinations; skid/scrape analysis; deformation/penetration patterns; racetrack liability; service training; product investigations and testing; fire investigations; simulator training; quality control; insurance investigations; air bag testing; and motor vehicle inspector.

John’s Certifications include ASE (Automotive Service Excellence); MVIC (Motor Vehicles Inspector Certification); and SSC (Snowmobile Safety Certification). John is also a Member of The American Motorcycle Association; The Society of Automotive Engineers; The Vintage Snowmobile Club of America; and The New York Statewide Traffic Accident Reconstruction Society.
 
John H. Hanst
Sports and Recreation Expert
Mr. Hanst has more than 35 years experience as a government and court qualified expert in more than 800 litigations involving sports and recreational activities.  John's professional licenses and certificates include:  licensed investigator, licensed pilot, emergency medical technician, licensed pool and water lifeguard, water safety instructor, CPR and first aid instructor, scuba diver, alpine ski and ski binding specialist, playground safety inspector, USTA tennis trainer, and amusement ride safety inspector and operations technician.

John is a member of NRPA, USTA, USCF, PPOA, ASTM, NFPT, IAAPA, and NAARSO.

Richard Hermance, FE, ACE;
Vehicle Crash Reconstruction and Snowmobile Expert
Mr. Hermance has over 30 years experience investigating motor vehicle crashes. Specific expertise includes snowmobile operations and functions, including safety; operator performance evaluations; speed determinations; skid/scrape analysis; deformation/penetration analysis; vehicle and component research and testing; seat belts, including child restraints; pedestrian and bicycle incidents; crash computer simulations; trail design and safety, including signage; human factors, including daytime/nighttime visibility and reaction times; occupant trajectory; motorcycles, ATVs, racing cars, and watercraft; buses, motor homes, and trailers, including campers; dynamic traction analysis; injury and crash biomechanics; Crash Data Recorder (CDC) analysis; acceleration and braking tests; and farm equipment.

Thomas H. Sawyer, Ed.D, NAS, AAHPERD
Recreation, Exercise, and Sport Safety Expert
Dr. Sawyer has more than 25 years experience in Recreation, Exercise and Sport Safety.  His expertise includes sports, exercise, recreation, physical education, amusement, and fitness activities and equipment; facilities operation; sport finance; sport governance; sport law; sport management; sport marketing; sport sociology; facility design including skate parks, aquatics parks, swimming pools, hot tubs/saunas/steam rooms, campus recreational sport facilities, parks/recreational areas; golf courses; and coaching and training.

Tom is a member of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, the Sport Management Council, the Indiana AHPERD, the Midwest District AAHPERD, the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation, the Council on Facilities and Equipment, the Sport and Recreation Law Association, the Sport Lawyers Association, the International Sport Law Journal, the Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, and is a reviewer for the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

Mr. Schexneider has almost 30 years experience as a Physical Therapist. David S. Smith, PhD
Maritime/Aquatic Safety Expert; Commander, USCG (retired)
Mr. Smith has more than 30 years in maritime and aquatic safety, including more than 20 years in the US Coast Guard.  His experience includes marine and water recreation including personal injury; vessel and equipment design, construction, operation, and maintenance; search and rescue; boat collisions and groundings; rules-of-the-road; diving; personnel safety training, including life guarding and supervision; drowning progressions - signs of drowning; cervical spine injuries due to diving; pool/beach design and construction; water skiing and tubing; jet skis/wave runners; white water rafting; incidents at, in, or below hydro electric plants and low head dams; alcohol and environmental stressors/factors including hypothermia; signs and warnings; reconstruction of water and boating incidents; PFD's (personal flotation devices); towing incidents; and fire fighter water safety.

Dave has authored numerous publications and articles, and given multiple media presentations and lectures, including the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; the Boy Scouts of America; the National Association for Search and Rescue; the National Safety Council-Congress; and the US Army Corps of Engineers.  He has been named Emergency Services Instructor of the Year by the Illinois EMT Association, and received the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Honor Recognition, and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators National Award, as well as several US Coast Guard Medals.  He is a member of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, the National Safety Council Safety Training Institute, and various State Nursing Boards.

 Mr. Waldron has over 20 years experience as an owner and operator of billiard's halls. His expertise includes billiard hall layout and design; standards of operation including safety; pool table refurbishment and service; and billiard hall equipment, accessories and supplies.
 
James S. Wickersham, PE
Mechanical Engineer
Licensed Engineer in California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Utah
Mr. Wickersham has more than 20 years experience in construction, maintenance, and mechanical engineering.  His experience includes recreational activities/ facilities/ equipment, including amusement parks, playgrounds, and winter sports; fire/ explosion investigations; gas turbine and combined cycle power plants; ski resort maintenance and operations, including security, grooming, training and supervision of all personnel; boiling water reactors; nuclear energy plants, including maintenance, supervision, and mechanical tooling.

Jim is a Licensed Professional Engineer, Certified Level I Amusement Ride Inspector, and Certified Playground Safety Inspector. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; the American Society for Testing and Materials, F24 and F27 Committees; National Society of Professional Engineers; Professional Ski Instructors of America; and National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials.
